The New Zealand Government has announced plans to open its doors to more international students over the next nine years.
This development will enable the New Zealand Government to welcome 30000 international students by 2034, injecting $3.6 billion into the process and providing a short pathway to permanent residency and citizenship status.

New Zealand will be doubling its international student population by 2034.
In a statement by the Education Minister, the Government of New Zealand will welcome 30,000 foreign students into its territories. Increasing the figures from 83,700 to 119,000.
According to sources, this announcement may have been due to the restrictions imposed on international students by other top countries such as United State of America, and Australia
More Work Hours for International Students in New Zealand
Starting from November 2025, international students with valid student visa will be allowed to work for 25 hours per week, up from the previous 20 – in line with the “International Education Going for Growth Plan”.
This program will increase the workforce available in the country and address the labor shortage experienced by employers in New Zealand.
Additionally, students on an approved exchange or Study Abroad programme will now also be eligible to work, helping New Zealand to welcome international students.
The Government will also investigate introducing a short-term work visa for up to six months for those who don’t qualify to work after finishing studying – allowing students time to seek employment in their field of study under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) pathway.
