Amazing tips for appealing a rejected study application letter

What is a Study Application Letter?

A study application letter usually comes after a student has received an offer of admission from his/her chosen school. It is a statement detailing your reasons for applying for a study abroad and proof of your financial capacity to fund your study.

You must have been able to convince the school why you are the ideal candidate yet fail to convince the visa officer. It is possible to have the most detailed CV/Resume, statement of purpose or personal statement, reference letters, and other necessary documents that can convince the admission board, but then suffer a setback at the point of applying for a study Visa.

Common Reasons for Rejection of Study Application Letters

  • Lack of a convincing home tie
  • Unclear funding plans
  • Inconsistency in motivation for study and home ties
  • Having no coherence of purpose in study/work background, intended course and future aspirations.

How to avoid falling victim to a rejected study application.

  • Explain in clear terms how you plan to fund your study
  • Create a connection between your background experiences and the intended course
  • In explaining what your goals are upon completing your study, resist the urge to make indicting statements. Remarks such as “I plan to seek a better job abroad” should be completely avoided.

You have gone beyond the stages listed above, and you have found yourself in an application logjam with the visa officer. What’s the next call of action?

The good news here is, you are allowed to appeal your rejected application. And, no, this has nothing to do with filing a case in an appellate court against the visa officer.

What is an appeal letter?

A Study Appeal Letter, also known as a Letter Of Explanation (LOE), is a letter written to the Visa Officer seeking a review of the rejected application.

In writing an appeal letter, you are expected to give a detailed account of some of the missing links and points in your first application. You should also make sure that your explanations are consistently consistent (necessary emphasis on consistency).

What to include in your Appeal Letter or Letter of Explanation

  • Introduction

You don’t necessarily need to write “Introduction” as a heading here. However, take time to briefly introduce yourself starting with your full name and profession. Next, you discuss how you had been elated by the offer of admission from your school but strongly feel that your appeal letter has been wrongfully rejected.

  • Reasons for rejection

Highlight the reasons for rejection as it applies to you.

  • Motivation

Paint a clear picture of what motivated you to study the course.

  • Academic and Professional Background

Talk about how your academic and professional background makes you a perfect fit. (Provided they show a connection to the intended course)

  • Reason(s) for choice of country and school

Write in detail how the chosen country and school are the best choice for your aspiration compared to your country and other schools.

  • Funding plans

Here, you need to write in detail about how you plan to fund your travel.

Important tips to note under your funding plans

• Avoid beating around the bush on how you plan to fund your study.

• If you are currently uncertain about how you plan to fund your studies, take your time before filing for an appeal. A study visa application letter should not be devoid of a clear explanation of funding plans.

  • Home ties

Consider this section the most important aspect of your application. Here, you are expected to give a good account of what you plan to do back home with the knowledge gained from your study. Also, take the time to explain those work or personal relationships that are certain to make you come back home. An example could be your current work, your parents who depend on you or your spouse and kids back home (if applicable).
